I have quite a bad fear of spiders, by the end of the summer when theres lots of them around i have been known to have panic attacks and refuse to sleep in my own house. Has anyone had any treatment or therapy or something to get over fears/ phobias and has it worked?
Aversion therapy is meant to be quite successful. If it’s affecting you so badly, ask your GP about it.
One of the best things for getting over phobias is simply to experience the scary thing in safe settings. I’ve included some links that may be helpful.
I’ve only had temporary phobias typically caused by an event, but I don’t know that they are at the same level that someone who has severe panick attacks. I got over them with regular exposure.
Incremental Exposure: It essentially invovles coming into contact with spiders in increasing doses, starting, for example, by handling a toy spider, or a money spider. If you have panic attacks you should probably consult a professional before engaging in Incremental exposure.
Other people have tried hypnotherapy and some found it helpful.
One woman told me when she found out more about what she was scared about it and it lessened her reactions.
Aversion therapy is a form of behavior therapy in which an aversive (causing a strong feeling of dislike or disgust) stimulus is paired with an undesirable behavior in order to reduce or eliminate that behavior. I do not agree nor recommend this. Some people have had horrific experinces.
If you have panic attacks you should seek a professoinal because that is a deep phobia and no-one should suffer so greatly without experienced help.
You force yourself by one step at a time.
To get rid of your fear of spiders
Step 1:
Face reality
I suggest learning about dust mites(since they are like spiders but very, very, tiny)

Step 2:
SPIDERS are NOT HARMFULL.

Step 3:
They WILL NOT harm you so DON’T BE AFRAID!

Step 4:
Take the BIG step of Seeing these so-called “Scary Spiders”

I got over my fear of heights and a did a free fall, bugs are the next step and I am not in a hurry, after 18 years here we do not have much when 20 below kills them.
CBT might work. Its a goal orientated therapy where you would work closely with someone to expose you gradually to your fear until it finally wasnt a problem. Your therapist would probably be wth you during this exposure. I know it works because I knew someone who was scared of rding on the underground. First she just went to the station, then to the platform, then got on and straght back off til eventually she could travel. U would probably see one in a jar with the lid on, then off and so on. Good luck.
For many years the only treatment available for people with phobias was desensitisation. For example, if you had a phobia of spiders you would gradually (very gradually) be introduced to the object you feared over a period of months, starting with tiny pictures, moving to slightly bigger pictures and eventually maybe a video and so forth. This was usually a painful process, when it worked at all, with people gradually getting used to the spiders whilst gritting their teeth!
A neuro-linguistic programmer may be able to help. I witnessed a guy cured of his fear of heights in a Classroom situation.
Wonder what it is about spiders – a learned fear?
I like them (but not their webs and cobwebs in the house) and have to rescue my husband from them!
